We recognize that your privacy is important. This document outlines the types of personal information we receive and collect when you use Overexamined Life or any associated online properties, as well as some of the steps we take to safeguard information. We hope this will help you make an informed decision about sharing personal information with us.
Overexamined Life strives to maintain the highest standards of decency, fairness and integrity in all our operations. Likewise, we are dedicated to protecting our customers’, consumers’ and online visitors’ private information on our website.
This website and all associated properties, whether online or offline, operate under the company name Outpost 13, a Washington (USA) limited liability company and the trade name Overexamined Life. Reference to any of these names incorporate a reference to all business entities owned and operated by Scott Weigle and Betsy Weigle, and to them as individuals.
Overexamined Life directly collects personally identifiable information from the visitors to our website only on a voluntary basis. Personal information collected on a voluntary basis may include name, postal address, email address, company name and telephone number.
See “Sharing of Information with Third Parties” (below) for information regarding collection of personally identifiable information.
This information is collected if you request information from us, participate in a contest or sweepstakes, or sign up to join our email list or request some other service or information from us. The information collected is internally reviewed, used to improve the content of our website, notify our visitors of updates, and respond to visitor inquiries.
Once information is reviewed, it is discarded or stored in our files. Personal information received from any visitor will be used only for internal purposes and will not be sold or provided to third parties.
The purpose of a cookie is to tell the Web server that you have returned to a specific website. For example, if you personalize our site’s pages, or register with any of our site’s services, a cookie enables Overexamined Life to recall your specific information on subsequent visits.
A web beacon is a transparent image file used to monitor your journey around a single website or collection of sites. They are also referred to as web bugs or pixels and other names, and are commonly used by sites that use third-party services to monitor traffic.
- We do not track visitors for use in Facebook ad targeting.
- We do anonymously track data from your visit for the purpose of collecting traffic statistics using Google Analytics, which is not associated with any advertising.
You have the ability to accept, decline or delete cookies by following the instructions provided by your Web browser; however, if you choose to decline or delete cookies, you may not be able to fully experience the interactive features of our online properties.
Overexamined Life uses web beacons, often in conjunction with cookies, to understand how visitors interact with the pages and content on the pages of our online properties.
Browsers can be set to accept or reject cookies or notify you when a cookie is being sent. Privacy software can be used to override web beacons. Taking either of these actions may cause display problems with our site.
We do not accept third-party advertising, so tracking of personal information related to serving ads does not occur on any Overexamined Life online properties.
Aggressive ad blockers may interfere with certain non-ad-related features, such as social sharing buttons.
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act
This website is directed to adults; it is not directed to children under the age of 13. We operate our site in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, and will not knowingly collect or use personal information from anyone under 13 years of age.
In some cases, we may collect information about you that is not personally identifiable. We use this information, which does not identify individual users, to analyze trends, to administer the site, to track users’ movements around the site and to gather demographic information about our user base as a whole. The information collected is used solely for internal review and not shared with other organizations for commercial purposes.
Non-personal information may be collected by third parties, such as Google Analytics or other services. Their privacy policies apply to their collection of personal information.
Release of Information
If any Overexamined Life property is sold, the information we have obtained from you through your voluntary participation in our site may transfer to the new owner as a part of the sale in order that the service being provided to you may continue. In that event, you will receive notice through our website of that change in control and practices, and we will make reasonable efforts to ensure that the purchaser honors any opt-out requests you might make of us.
How You Can Correct or Remove Information
If you would like to be unsubscribed from our mailing list, you can make that election at the bottom of any newsletter or by asking to be unsubscribed by using our contact form.
We cannot correct or remove information obtained by third parties such as Facebook or others.
“Do Not Track” Signals
Overexamined Life does not endeavor to overcome “do not track” signals from your browser. We do not employ internally-produced code that would allow us to overcome these signals, and we do not modify third-party provider coding in any way.
Sharing of Information with Third Parties
Overexamined Life collects various information via third-party scripts or plugins that is shared with trusted third parties. These parties include:
- Email publication provider (ActiveCampaign) for use in sending out newsletters and solicitations
- Sharing service providers (sharing icons) for providing the convenience of easily sharing site content via buttons and other methods, or for following site or brand updates
This is not an exhaustive list and the third-party providers we use may change from month to month.
In all instances, we collect the minimal information necessary to achieve our purpose, and always comply with the requirements of the third-party provider. We are subject to the processes of third-party providers such as Facebook and can neither add to nor subtract from the functioning of their software plugins or scripts.
Note that payment information related to purchases is collected by Stripe and/or PayPal as part of the checkout process; Overexamined Life does not have access to any of this information.
