Comment Policy

I welcome and encourage comments on OverExamined Life. That includes comments expressing disagreement with my ideas. However, I or the people who assist me reserve the right to edit or delete comments at any time without notice. Be constructive, reasonable and thoughtful and you’ll have no problems. If you aren’t on your best behavior, then… problems.

Here are the general guidelines and rules, all of which are subject to my own discretion and can be changed at any time:

No trolls allowed

  • Initial comments may be moderated to ensure you are not a troll.
  • If you ever prove to be a troll, you will be banned.

Trollish behavior includes:

  • Comments made for the primary purpose of being inflammatory or offensive.
  • Statements that attack another person individually.
  • Other stuff that I’ll know when I see it.

Profanity and vulgarity is not allowed

I’m not a prude and I’ve been known to swear occasionally but not excessively in my personal life. But not here, because it’s off-putting to many people and doesn’t add to the meaning of the articles. 1Yes, there is a sprinkling of mild swear words on this site, such as the heading in my bingeing article that says “Lies, damn lies and diets.” And I think I used the phrase “crap ton of broccoli” in a video on that same page. But they are as rare as hen’s teeth, to quote a favorite phrase of my father, and any swear words in comments should be just as rare. So I don’t encourage profanity or vulgarity in comments. If you use either, your comment will likely be edit or deleted, even if you are not trolling. If you keep using it, you’ll be banned from commenting.

Spam is not allowed

I have a big problem with spam. If your comment has made it through my spam filters and I still consider it to be spammish, I’ll delete it and ban you from further commenting.

Spam includes:

  • Names that aren’t real names (keywords or site names, etc.).
  • Comments unrelated to the article that are intended to promote a service or product.
  • Links within comments, especially if they lead to irrelevant content or affiliate websites.
  • Other stuff that I’ll know when I see it.

Comment away!

That’s it. Just behave and we’ll get along fine.
